Alexander McDonnell was an Irish chess master who rose to prominence through his legendary series of six matches against Louis-Charles Mahe de La Bourdonnais in 1834. Though he ultimately lost the overall contest, the matches produced many celebrated games and cemented his reputation as one of the early 19th century's finest players. He was known to employ the Evans Gambit.
