GM Robert Byrne
Robert Byrne was an American Grandmaster who won the U.S. Championship in 1972 and competed as a World Championship Candidate in 1974. Representing the United States at nine Chess Olympiads between 1952 and 1976, he collected seven medals. He also served as the chess columnist for The New York Times from 1972 to 2006, having transitioned from a career as a university professor to professional chess in the early 1970s.
