An 11-year-old joined a men's team. Bodhana Sivanandan scored 1.5/2 on her Second Bundesliga debut for Hamburger SK on October 10 and 11, 2026, according to ChessBase. The club first offered her a women's league spot, and a push for the men's section changed that.

ChessBase lists two age records for her: nobody younger has ever played in the German Bundesliga, and nobody has earned the woman grandmaster (WGM) title at a younger age.

She lined up for HSK II, Hamburg's second team, which made the short trip to Lübeck. She drew on Saturday and won on Sunday.

The team results split as well: a 4.5-3.5 defeat against the hosts, then a 5-3 win over SK Kiel.

The men's team was not the club's first idea. Hamburger SK's management committee had offered her a place in its Women's Bundesliga side, but Frederic Friedel, who had introduced her family to the club's Bundesliga team, wanted the men's section.

"But there she would have to face strong grandmasters," the committee said, according to ChessBase.

"Not a problem," Friedel told them, as ChessBase recounted.

Two rounds in Lübeck

On Saturday, October 10, the hosts brought three grandmasters: national coach Jan Gustafsson, Jonny Hector and Raj Tischbierek.

Hamburg had a single grandmaster, Nikolas Lubbe, and ChessBase described the visitors as clear underdogs on average Elo. Bodhana held her game to a draw, though Lübeck took the match 4.5-3.5.

On Sunday, October 11, she won on board three against SK Kiel, and Hamburg took that match 5-3. A ChessBase photo caption shows her winning a rook ending against Magnus Arndt.

ChessBase published that game with annotations by André Schulz.

From a training week to the lineup

Her path to the Hamburg team began in April 2026, when she and her father spent a week in the city for training sessions, ChessBase reported.

During that stay, Friedel took them to meet the Hamburger Schachklub's Bundesliga squad, and the talks about where she would play started there.

At the time, ChessBase wrote that it expected her to turn out for Hamburg soon. The October weekend made that happen.

Before heading to Lübeck, Bodhana and her father stopped in Hamburg, where she recorded material at the ChessBase office.

The sessions were for ChessBase Magazine, plus Endgame Magic recordings with GM Karsten Müller. She also called on the Friedel family at home and signed their guest book, which ChessBase called famous.

What the debut adds up to

For HSK II, the weekend brought one loss and one win. For Bodhana, it produced a draw against a side with three grandmasters and a full point on board three.

ChessBase judged 1.5 points from two games a respectable return for an 11-year-old. The report did not say when she will next play for Hamburg.

Bodhana's Sunday win, as ChessBase described it, came in a rook ending, and her debut put her up against stronger opposition.
