Louis-Charles Mahé de La Bourdonnais
Louis-Charles Mahe de La Bourdonnais was a French chess master widely considered the strongest player in the world during the early nineteenth century. His legendary matches against Alexander McDonnell in 1834 remain among the most celebrated encounters in chess history. He was a pioneer of the Sicilian Defence and other romantic-era openings.
