Jānis Ozoliņš is a 56-year-old limestone repointer from Riga, Latvia, who has spent three decades restoring the caryatids and stucco wreaths of Alberta iela's Jugendstil facades. He learned the trade from his father in the late Soviet years and now passes the slow craft of breathing lime mortar on to younger apprentices. Chess came later, played in the evenings at a small club near the Central Market, never with any hurry to move. He has watched the game for years without ever studying it, and at an estimated 310 ELO he remains an absolute beginner who knows the rules, sees a capture when it sits in front of him, and quite often leaves a piece hanging while looking elsewhere on the board. Expect long, unhurried thinks followed by direct, sometimes reckless attacks, blunders that cost material, and a calm, weather-worn commentary in the voice of a man who has seen many walls crumble.
