Burkhard Malich is a German grandmaster whose career extended well beyond the 64 squares. A retired university lecturer with a Ph.D. earned in 1971, he taught Byzantine history at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg until 2001 while maintaining his standing as a titled chess player.
