Joaquim Durão was a Portuguese International Master and a towering figure in his country's chess history. He won the Portuguese Championship thirteen times, represented Portugal in ten Chess Olympiads, and served as president of the Portuguese Chess Federation. In the 1975 zonal tournament, he tied for an interzonal qualifying spot but lost a playoff to Sergio Mariotti.
