Max Euwe was the fifth World Chess Champion, holding the title from 1935 to 1937 after defeating Alexander Alekhine. A Dutch mathematician by profession, he later served as President of FIDE from 1970 to 1978. Known as a fortress builder who favored ultra-solid, rule-based classical play, he was also a prolific chess author whose works shaped generations of players.
