Vladimir Alatortsev was a distinguished Soviet chess player who won championships in both Leningrad and Moscow during the 1930s, competing in nine USSR Championship finals. After retiring from competitive play in the early 1950s, he served as chairman of the All-Union chess section and later the USSR Chess Federation, shaping Soviet chess organization for years. He was also a hydraulics engineer by profession.
