GM Ernst Grünfeld
Austrian grandmaster and writer Ernst Grunfeld was among the inaugural recipients of the FIDE grandmaster title in 1950. Best known for the Grunfeld Defence that bears his name, he made lasting contributions to opening theory and was a prominent figure in the chess world between the two World Wars.
