Ludek Pachman was a Czech-German Grandmaster, acclaimed chess writer, and political activist. After being imprisoned and tortured by the Communist regime in Czechoslovakia, he emigrated to West Germany in 1972, where he resumed competitive play and won the West German Championship in 1978. He also qualified for the Interzonal in 1976, demonstrating remarkable resilience both in life and on the board.
