GM Paul Keres
Paul Keres was an Estonian Grandmaster and prolific chess writer who ranked among the world's best from the mid-1930s through the mid-1960s. Known for his smooth classical technique combined with opportunistic counterattacks, he narrowly missed a World Championship match on five separate occasions. The turbulence of World War II forced him to represent both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union at different points, as Estonia was occupied by successive powers.
