Yuri Averbakh was a Soviet and Russian Grandmaster, prolific author, and chairman of the USSR Chess Federation from 1973 to 1978. He made history as the first centenarian FIDE Grandmaster, continuing to engage in chess-related activities even past his 100th birthday despite declining eyesight and hearing.
