Ratmir Kholmov was a Russian Grandmaster who won numerous international tournaments across Eastern Europe and tied for the Soviet Championship title in 1963. Although largely unknown in the West due to being restricted to events in socialist countries during his peak years, he was one of the strongest Soviet players from the mid-1950s through the 1970s, ranked as high as eighth in the world. A wartime sailor turned chess professional, he remained active in competitive chess past the age of 80.
