Adolf Anderssen was a German chess master widely regarded as the world's strongest player during two separate periods in the mid-19th century. He triumphed at the landmark international tournaments of 1851 and 1862, though he fell to Paul Morphy in 1858 and Wilhelm Steinitz in 1866. A brilliant tactician, Anderssen was celebrated for his attacking flair in openings like the King's Gambit and the Evans Gambit.
