Fred Yates was an English chess master who captured the British Chess Championship on six occasions. Originally pursuing a career in accountancy, he abandoned it in 1909 to become a professional chess player and journalist. His competitive play featured the Queen's Gambit Declined and the Ruy Lopez prominently.
