Howard Staunton
Howard Staunton was an English chess master widely considered the strongest player in the world from 1843 to 1851. He promoted the standardized chess piece design that still bears his name and is required in all official competitions today. As the principal organizer of the first international chess tournament in London 1851, he helped transform England into the center of the chess world.
