Joseph Henry Blackburne was a British chess master nicknamed "The Black Death" who dominated the English chess scene in the latter half of the 19th century. Despite learning the game at the relatively late age of 17, he rapidly became one of the world's leading players and sustained a professional career spanning over fifty years. He popularised chess throughout Britain with simultaneous and blindfold exhibitions, and also published a collection of his games.
