Aleksandar Matanovic was a Serbian Grandmaster and one of Yugoslavia's leading players throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Beyond the board, he left a lasting legacy by founding Chess Informant in 1966, the publishing house behind the renowned Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings. His repertoire spanned the Nimzo-Indian, Ruy Lopez, and Sicilian Scheveningen.
