Nigel Short is an English Grandmaster who achieved the title at age 19 and was ranked third in the world from mid-1988 to mid-1989. In 1993, he became the first English player to contest a World Championship match, facing Garry Kasparov in the PCA championship in London. Since September 2022, he has served as FIDE Director for Chess Development, while also working as a columnist, coach, and commentator.
