Heikki Westerinen made history as the first Finnish player to earn the Grandmaster title, achieving it in 1975. A national master by sixteen, he won the Finnish Championship four times and represented Finland in Chess Olympiads spanning over four decades from 1962 to 2006. Known for his original and combinative style, his best results included tournament victories at Sant Feliu de Guixols and Dortmund in the 1970s.
