GM Wolfgang Uhlmann
Wolfgang Uhlmann was East Germany's preeminent chess player for over three decades, capturing the national championship 11 times between the mid-1950s and late 1980s. He reached the 1971 Candidates Tournament, placing him among the world's top contenders, and was a lifelong devotee of the French Defence. He continued playing into his later years before passing away at age 85 in Dresden.
